About Butch

Hangin' at Hyner
This photo shows two of my favorite places in Clinton County. The view from Hyner View State Park and the West Branch of the Susquehanna River.

Welcome to my blog.

I have been a full-time photographer for nearly thirty years. I was very fortunate that my hobby evolved into my profession.

My first endeavor in the field was as a photojournalist, specializing in action sports. My work has appeared in:

The Sunday Grit (Williamsport)
The Williamsport Sun-Gazette
The Press Enterprise (Bloomsburg)
The Centre Daily Times (State College)
The Harrisburg Patriot
The Times-Express (Easton)
The Morning Call (Allentown)
The Reading Eagle
The Rocket-Courier (Wyalusing)
The Mirror (Altoona)
The Times-News (Erie)
The Luminary (Muncy)
The Morning-Times (Sayre)
The Tines-Tribune (Scranton)
The News Item (Shamokin)
The Standard Journal (Milton)
The Philadelphia Inquirer
The Daily News (Philadelphia)
The Pittsburgh Post Gazette
The Pocono Record
The Times Observer (Warren)
The Welsboro Gazette
The Daily Local News (West Chester)
The Times Leader (Wilkes-Barre)
The York Dispatch
The Express (Lock Haven)
The Record (Clinton County).

My work has been published in newspapers and magazines across the country and around the world via submissions to the Associated Press.

While working as a “PJ” (Highly technical term used by those in the field to describe a photojournalist) I honed the skills necessary to come home with “THE” image under the most extreme circumstances. I have worked 18 Little League World Series, more than 200 NCAA Division I, II and III events including conference and regional playoffs and national championships in wrestling, football, basketball, baseball, soccer, lacrosse and field hockey. I have worked over 20 Major League Baseball games, over 40 National Football League games. Not to mention thousands of high school and youth sporting events including district and state playoffs and championships. With this experience, I can handle most adverse conditions with ease while treating the most mundane event as though it were the “Big Time”. With professional tools and proven experience in the field, I can offer you the best quality possible at a reasonable price.

Currently I operate Butch Miller’s Photo Works located at 212 East Water Street in Lock Haven where I offer full-service studio and location photography capabilities for portraiture, wedding, commercial and action sports photography.

Many local residents are familiar with me because of my 16 years as chief photographer at The Express. I am a Lycoming County native, however, I quickly became quite enamored with Clinton County. We are blessed with a great community to live in and raise a family.

I have been an avid outdoorsman my whole life. Clinton County offers countless opportunities for outdoor recreation. Sproul State Forest and the many State Parks in the area are truly gems of nature. My main interests are kayaking, biking and hiking. On most weekends from late March until late autumn, you can find me paddling on the West Branch, Bald Eagle Creek or Pine Creek. Except of course when I have a wedding scheduled.

Clinton county also offers other forms of recreation and entertainment as well. The Millbrook Playhouse is summer stock at it’s finest. The many festivals, fairs and carnivals are always a favorite of mine. The Clinton County Fair, The Flaming Foliage Festival and the Lock Haven Jaycees Regatta are but a few such opportunities sure to make you smile.

The most rewarding part of my work over the past two decades has been following our young people competing in youth, high school and local college sports. I have had the opportunity to meet many young athletes and watch them grow up in to fine citizens. (I am already on my second generation of athletes in a couple of sports!) I have covered our young people from pre-season scrimmages to state championships. Win, lose or draw, I have rarely been disappointed in their efforts. For me it isn’t about winning alone that will make me a fan. It is how you handle the losses and adversity that will also earn my support.

Now many of these same “kids” trust me with their senior portraits, weddings and family portraits. It is very humbling to receive the honor to be chosen to chronicle the highlights of their lives.

I am the father of three children. James, Melissa and Jennifer. I have two grandsons, Calvin and Owen and a daughter-in-law, Beth.

Come back and visit as often as you would like. Drop me a line in the comments section of the posts or use the contact page on the website.

Thanks for stopping by.
